Glamoroso!

(7) The High Society Of New York

On the Upper East Side, east of Central Park, jewels click in harmony. Nevertheless, real-estate billionaire Donald Trump says there are some downsides to being rich. For example, you may simply have to live with a next-door neighbour on Fifth Avenue whom you really can’t stand — that’s just life in a city of high-rise living. Even millionaires here tend to live in rented apartments.

New York can be a beautiful place to live -  for the rich. Soon after our interview, Michael Bloomberg decided to run for mayor of the city. Shortly after our meeting, Art Garfunkel announced a reunion concert with Paul Simon. And just after filming, hotel-empire heiress Paris Hilton, 16 years old at the time, became the ultimate It-Girl. Her mother, Kathy, meanwhile, was ever busy organizing charity events at the Waldorf Astoria.

Peter Beard, New York’s famous Africa photographer, explains his city like this: “Everything is there: the lions, the elephants, the elegant antelopes in high heels, and the waterholes, where everybody needs to be.” Best selling author Jay McInerney admits: “In the end, everything seems to be a matter of getting the window table at the hippest restaurant”.

*Original German title: Mondän!
