Glamoroso!

(12) The High Society Of Rio de Janeiro

Only for New Year’s Eve parties do rich Cariocas — as the people of Rio de Janeiro call themselves — head to Copacabana, taking in the fireworks and the famous beach packed with hundreds of thousands of ordinary people. Normally, they stay within their guarded condominiums in Ipanema, Gávea, Leblon or Barra. Or, like plastic surgery pioneer Ivo Pitanguy, on their private island some distance from Rio.

Between favelas and villas, we meet Zico, the white Pelé; Hans Stern, the country’s greatest jeweller, born in Essen, in Germany’s Ruhr area; and Hans Donner, Brazil’s celebrated TV designer, and his wife, carnival and samba queen Globeleza.

The great-grandson of Brazil’s last emperor, Prince João de Orleans e Bragança, is now an ecologist who would rather be in Rio’s remaining rainforest than at extravagant parties.

* Original German title: Mondän!
