GLAMOROSO!
(9) THE HIGH SOCIETY OF VIENNA
Countess Eva von Walderdorff is “moved to tears” whenever she hears the Vienna Waltz. The Vienna Opera Ball is the event of the year, and everybody goes — provided they’re invited. Even if, in those days, builder-millionaire Richard “Mörtel” Lugner sometimes brought porn star Dolly Buster as his lady for the night.
Nevertheless, Vienna’s high society can be good fun, at least during the ball season in late winter. Austria’s aristocracy is no longer officially allowed to hold their titles, so the carnival season is about the only time of year when everyone can revive the nostalgia of old times — with the emperor and his court.
Count Abensperg-Traun‘s ancisters have been fighting the Turks, beleaguering the walls of Vienna, the Duke of Schwarzenberg is not only owning a huge private palais and park in the very centre of Vienna and is also serving as a minister for the Czech Republic, and Hubertus of Hohenlohe is commuting between Los Angeles and Vienna to record his dancefloor music.
Count Abensperg-Traun’s ancestors fought the Turks besieging the walls of Vienna. The Duke of Schwarzenberg not only owns a huge private palace and park in the very centre of Vienna but also serves as a minister for the Czech Republic. And Hubertus of Hohenlohe commutes between Los Angeles and Vienna to record his dance-floor music.
“Vienna is different” was coined as a slogan for the city by its late former mayor, Helmut Zilk. “Vienna has come to a complete halt,” says former Formula One world champion Niki Lauda. Both seem to be true.
