Glamoroso!

(5) The High Society of Portofino

Portofino is not really a place to book a holiday (there are only three hotels in the tiny village). It’s better if you own your own villa in the hills around Portofino’s little harbour and its Piazzetta. The only acceptable alternative seems to be the Hotel Splendido, a place that still has the air of Loren, de Sica and Mastroianni. Portofino is also the place where former Prime Minister Bettino Craxi was supposed to have laundered money. But that doesn’t spoil the looks of what is probably the most picturesque fishing cove on the Riviera coast.

Today on the Piazzetta you might bump into Giorgio Armani or his sister. Or into Contessa Agusta (of the helicopter manufacturers), who once spent her house arrest here, overlooking the beauty of the bay. Craxi spent his last evening here, with lasagne and open-air guitar music, before he escaped to Tunisia overnight, evading the police with plans to take him into custody.

Portofino is exclusive in the truest sense. The high society of Milan, Turin and Genoa comes together here for weekends and summer nights. Nowhere is aperitivo better. Fashion designer families like the Pradas, Valentino, Gigli or the Armanis own secluded mansions here, just like Berlusconi or the Agnelli clan. And then there is Elfriede Galotti. She came from rural Siegen-Wittgenstein in 1942, met Count Galotti at the Hotel Splendido, married, and stayed ever since.

*Original German title: Mondän!
