Glamoroso!

(6) The High Society Of Deauville

Deauville was only invented on the drawing board at the end of the 19th century, though many of its Gothic buildings pretend to be more historical. Despite this little trick, Deauville still attracts the well-off Parisians, and many more besides. Superstar actor Omar Sharif spent the longest part of his long life in Deauville, and Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum comes frequently, drawn by the horse races and the best horse breeding in France.

Deauville is low-key and discreet. Although, you might walk the beach and meet fashion photographer superstar Peter Lindbergh at a casual shoot with Isabella Rossellini. Or bump into Harrison Ford and his director Wolfgang Petersen. Or rendezvous at ‘Les Planches’, Deauville’s endless beach promenade, with someone like Claudia Cardinale, whom you may have just seen at the movies, in Sergio Leone’s ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’.

Be prepared to gain access to elegant studs for the best race horses in Europe, to the spooky Château de Champ-de-Bataille, where France’s most exclusive interior designer lives secluded and in private, or to private fashion shows at Deauville’s outrageous hotels. Or just watch the sunset over the sea, next to the mouth of the Seine.

*Original German title: Mondän!
