Glamoroso!

(2) The High Society of St. Moritz

The concept of winter holidays was invented in the Swiss mountains of the Canton of Engadin, in St. Moritz. Holidaymakers sip champagne at the ski station and take the hotel’s Rolls-Royce to the lift station. Millionaires who have never stayed at Badrutt’s Palace, played curling on the ice rink of the Kulm Hotel, or danced all night long at the Dracula Club, founded by Gunter Sachs, cannot really claim to be rich.

Gunter Sachs once produced a film that was like a love letter to his favourite resort. He still tells stories about the atmosphere and spirit of liberation among the young heirs and rich youth of the so-called jet-set scene of the roaring sixties. Riding down the Cresta Run ice tunnel on a skeleton was the ultimate reward for the crazy generation. At least according to Sachs and Krupp heir Arnold von Bohlen. Breaking a rib on the Cresta Run was like a rite of passage. Nowadays Albert of Monaco is racing down the bobsleigh run in more serious, more worldly competitions, trying to get fit for the Olympic Winter Games. While former Bond Roger Moore is raising considerable money for UNICEF, at Badrutt’s Palace of course.

*Original German title: Mondän!
