(5) The High Society of Portofino
Portofino is a place, wehre you do not make holidays (that‘s why there are only 3 hotels in tiny village). You better own a villa in the hills around Portofino‘s little harbour and its Piazzetta. The only acceptable alternative seems to be the Hotel Splendido, a place that still has the air of Loren, de Sica and Mastroianni. Portofino is also the place where former Prime Minister Bettino Craxi was supposed to launder money. But that doesn‘t spoil the looks of the probably most picturesque fishermen‘s cove of the Riviera coast.
Today on the Pizzetta you might bump into Giorgio Armani or his sister. Or into Contessa Agusta (of the helicopter producers), who once spend her home arrest here, overlooking the beauty of the bay. Craxi spend his last evening here, with a Lasagne and guitar music open air, before he escaped to Tunisia over night, to get away from the police that was after him already to get him to custody.
Portofino is exclusive in the real sense. The high society of Milan, Torino and Genova come together here for weekends and summer nights. Aperitivo has hardly been better anywhere else. Fashion designer families like the Pradas, Valentino, Gigli or the Armanis own secluded mansions here, just like Berlusconi or the Agnelli clan. And there is also Elfriede Galotti. She came 1942 from rural Siegen-Wittgenstein, met the Count Galotti at the Hotel Splendido, married, and stayed put ever since.
*Original German title: Mondän!
